BREATHING
"The intimate texture of being is breathing, or poetical rhythm."
– Franco Bifo Berardi, philosopher and cultural theorist

Informed by my reading of Franco Bifo Berardi, Byung-Chul Han, and Shinzen Young, and dedicated to our contemporary condition of asphyxiation, breathing includes twelve 8x10” photographic plates of my daughter’s face captured with an antique photographic process.
During the long — six minutes — exposures, the slight movements and shifts brought forth by her breathing rhythm registered on the collodion plates becoming the very subject of these symbolic images.

Panic, pollution, and police brutality lead us to identify suffocation as the main pathology of our time: our state today and that of our planet is one of breathlessness.
The polarizing, vibrating, neutralizing rhythm generated by the expanding and contracting flow of breath creates an implicit new harmony. These images are asking us to tune in.
