AMERICAN BALLS

Over the years outside my cabin home, erosion caused by flooding began to unearth the long-forgotten toys of the children who had lived here decades before. They included distinctly American Balls:

a football, a Fourth-of-July flag ball decorated with white stars.

Frayed, torn, and deflated, they are now testaments to the fragility

of a democracy in decline.
